Fatal Accident on I-77 South in York County, South Carolina
YORK COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA - A news report posted on heraldonline.com states that a part of Interstate 77 was closed in York County just south of the South-North Carolina state line following a fatal accident.* According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the fatal crash happened at one in the morning on the southbound side of I-77 by mile marker 89 north of Fort Mill, South Carolina.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol incident website displayed some of the four lanes remain blocked as the South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers work the accident scene about a mile south of the South-North Carolina state line. I-77 is the main road for commuter traffic returning to Rock Hill from Charlotte, South Carolina.
The driver tragically died at the accident scene in the single-vehicle accident, stated Master Trooper Gary Miller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The driver drove into a median along the left side of the I-77 before losing control and driving off of the right side of the interstate. The automobile then struck a tree and caught fire. There were no riders in the vehicle, and no other motor vehicles were involved in the accident.
According to Flint Hill Fire Department Chief David Jennings, firefighters responded to the accident scene. Jennings also stated that traffic remained very slow by the accident site at around 3:30 p.m.
The York County Coroner’s Office attended that accident scene but has not identified a tragically killed person in the accident. Alternate routes included U.S. 21 southbound into Rock Hill, South Carolina.
So far, in 2021, there have been 15 fatalities in York County, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
