Tragic, Fatal Accident in Jasper County, South Carolina (SC)
According to an online news report published on islandpacket.com, a pedestrian was tragically struck and killed by a motor vehicle at approximately 6 p.m. last Saturday evening.*
The South Carolina Highway Patrol reports that the victim was hit by a Dodge Ram pickup truck along S.C. 462 in Jasper County. The fatal accident happened in close proximity to the Step School Road intersection.
Martin Sauls, the Jasper County coroner, the victim was identified as a 68-year-old man from Ridgeland. The victim's name has been withheld. Mr. Sauls stated that an autopsy on the victim would be conducted at the Medical University of South Carolina.
According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper David Jones, the Dodge Ram pickup truck was heading westbound along highway 462 (Morgan Dollar Road) when the pickup truck hit the pedestrian who was walking eastbound along the westbound lanes. The Dodge Ram driver was wearing his seat belt, and he did not receive any accident-related injuries.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety stated that this accident was the twelfth fatal accident in Jasper County, South Carolina, so far in 2020. In 2019, there were 19 fatal accidents in Jasper County and 11 fatal accidents in 2018.
The fatal accident is currently under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. It is unknown if any criminal charges have been filed.
