Crash Injures Two on Highway 501 in Horry County, South Carolina (SC)

November 12, 2020

HORRY COUNTY, SC- Wmbfnews.com writes that a crash occurred this week on Highway 501 that left two people with severe injuries.*

The crash happens in Horry County close to Gardner Lacy Road in the evening. Two vehicles were involved, and two individuals sustained injuries as a result of the impact. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is taking part in the investigation. No details are currently available regarding the severity of the injuries or the condition of the victims of the collision. The report also did not state the cause of the crash.

Intersection crashes present a number of possible dangers to vehicle occupants. Side impact crashes often take place when a driver violates a red light or stop sign. Side impact collisions are some of the more severe types of crashes because the occupants of the vehicle struck on its side are not protected by a crumple zone. In fact, when it comes to side impacts, these incidents can become deadly when vehicles are traveling at only 30 miles per hour. Individuals in a vehicle that is struck on its broadside are extremely vulnerable in the event of a crash. Left turns also create many intersection collisions. Some studies indicate left turns are so dangerous that it might be worth avoiding them entirely.

There are ways to improve safety at intersections. Of course, following the speed limit and traffic signals and devices will help reduce your risk of being involved in the crash, but there is little a driver can do to prevent another motorist from violating traffic signals or signs. One way to make fatal collisions less likely is to improve intersection designs. Replacing traffic lights and signs with features such as roundabouts can drastically cut down on the right a fatal collision and the number of crashes overall. Such features are also effective at cutting down on traffic congestion.
