Motorcyclist Dies in Tragic Crash on Highway 321 in Winnsboro, South Carolina (SC)

November 12, 2020

WINNSBORO, SC- Wach.com writes that a crash left one person dead in Winnsboro this week.*

The crash involved a northbound motorcyclist who collided with a turning vehicle at 9th Street. The victim was a 23-year-old man from Winnsboro. Responders rushed the victim to the Prisma Health Richland medical facility, where he died from his injuries a short while after the crash. The incident is still under investigation. No information was provided regarding the driver of the other vehicle.

So far, in 2020, 876 people have died in car crashes in South Carolina. Of that total, 97 of the victims were riding motorcycles at the time. This crash marks the thirteenth fatality in Fairfield County. Three of those collisions involved motorcyclists. Motorcycle crashes have been increasing in South Carolina. In 2018, 104 people died in motorcycle collisions, followed by an increase in 2019.

According to officials, 2019 was the highest rate in several years. Safety advocates in the state point to distracted driving as one of the main causes of fatal motorcycle crashes. Other drivers are often not focused on the road, potentially leading to devastating results for motorcyclists.

One former rider stated that when she became the county coroner, she stopped riding motorcycles. When examining victims of motorcycle crashes, she said she learned that the problem was not often the motorcyclist but was the driver around that individual. The wife of a motorcyclist killed in a crash on South Carolina roads stated that her husband was not at fault for the crash that left him dead. She said that if her children wished to ride one, she would warn them that riding a motorcycle is the reason their father died young, as was another person failing to drive safely.

While every road user is responsible for keeping themselves safe on the road, motorcyclists are more dependent on other motorists. It is important for everyone to remember that they must share the road with motorcycles. Frequently, drivers who are distracted will cut into the path of motorcyclists leading to devastating results.
