Tragic Crash Kills One on US 278 in Hilton Head, South Carolina (SC)

October 21, 2020

HILTON HEAD, SC- Islandpacket.com writes that a young man died this week in a tragic crash on US 278 in Hilton Head.*

The victim had recently moved to the area, which, according to his family, he was extremely excited about. The victim traveled to Hilton Head on vacation and decided to make the location is home. Two weeks after vacationing at Hilton Head, the victim's father said the young man, originally from Kentucky, left and moved to Hilton Head to work at a company performing repairs on boats. Family and friends say that the young man was extremely happy following his recent move.

Unfortunately, an early-morning crash involving a Ford F-150 pickup truck caused a tragic end to the victim's life. The pickup truck struck the victim's car and caused the young man to become entrapped inside of his vehicle. Responders rushed the victim to the Hilton Head Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. The victim was one of nine children, according to the family. A neighbor living near the young man referred to the 24-year-old victim as a friendly and generous person who easily got along with everyone he met.

Sadly, South Carolina has a high rate of traffic fatalities every year. One study found that South Carolina has the third-highest rate of fatal car crashes in the entire United States. Among the reasons that South Carolina has such a high number of fatal crashes is the fact that the state is among the top 10 in the country when it comes to drunk driving rates. Drunk drivers continue to kill more than 10,000 people in the nation every year. For decades the number of deadly drunk driving crashes declined, and yet these incidents account for a significant proportion of overall collisions and car accident-related injuries and fatalities.
