Three Killed in Tragic Crash on Nexton Parkway in Summerville, South Carolina (SC)

SUMMERVILLE, SC- Abcnews4.com writes that a crash killed three people this week on Nexton Parkway in Summerville, South Carolina. Reports state that the accident happened in the late afternoon close to the Home Telekom building.*

A vehicle headed northbound on Nexton Parkway collided with a vehicle that was heading southbound and then attempted to turn. At the intersection with Brighton Park Boulevard., the vehicle that was headed straight struck the side of the turning vehicle. The impact occurred on the passenger side of the vehicle that was turning, killing all three people in that car. The driver in the other vehicle sustained injuries, and responders took that person to the hospital for treatment.

Side impact crashes often lead to fatal results. When one vehicle strikes another on its side, the vehicle that takes the side impact cannot provide adequate protection to the occupants. Drivers and passengers in vehicles with side airbags or curtain airbags are more protected than those whose vehicles lack these safety features. Car manufacturers are not required to install side or curtain airbags. 

One study conducted in Georgia found that at intersections, side impacts are responsible for the largest number of fatalities caused by crashes. Head-on impacts tend to carry a higher risk of death, but side impact crashes take place more often. Researchers suggest that roundabouts are one of the best ways to prevent these serious collisions from taking place. 

Roundabouts cause all cars to travel in the same direction, thereby eliminating the risk of side-impact and head-on crashes. Studies show that when roundabouts are used, all crash types decline, but injury-causing and fatality causing collisions decrease by even larger percentages. Pedestrians and other road users also benefit from the safety provided by roundabouts.
