Employee Dies in Tragic Accident in Spartanburg, South Carolina (SC)

October 21, 2020

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC- Foxcarolina.com writes that an accident at the Magna Seating plant located in Moore, South Carolina, tragically killed one employee. Reports indicate that the victim was a 60-year-old man from Woodruff.

The deadly accident occurred in the evening, and the victim died at the scene. The incident is still under investigation. South Carolina's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is taking part in the investigation of the fatal accident. The company confirmed the fatality and stated that the plant closed down in response to the incident, but would later reopen. Magna reported that they are saddened by the incident and that the health and safety of their workers is their top priority.*

Work-related fatalities are increasing in South Carolina. In 2017, 88 people died in work-related accidents within the Palmetto State. In 2018, that number rose to 98 fatal accidents. The leading cause of work-related death is transportation incidents. Transportation-related accidents killed 47 people in South Carolina workplace accidents in 2018. Injuries caused by violence carried out at the hands of another person or animals led to eighteen deaths that same year.

Slips, falls, and trips contributed as well and killed fourteen individuals in 2018. Nine of the fatalities resulted from contact with objects and equipment, and eight people died because of exposure to harmful substances. Men die for more often in work-related accidents than do women. Only eight of the people killed in South Carolina work-related accidents in 2018 were women, while the remaining 90 individuals were men.

OSHA is responsible for investigating work-related deaths. Many fatal accidents occur in construction and in industrial locations. OSHA has managed to reduce the number of fatal workplace accidents significantly over the last few decades. Still, much more should be done to prevent these tragedies. Many people die in accidents at work that are caused by failures to comply with safety regulations.
