Tragic Head-On Collision Kills One on Highway 24 Bridge in Anderson County, South Carolina

October 04, 2020

ANDERSON COUNTY, SC - rights that a head-on crash occurred this week in Anderson County, South Carolina. The victim of the tragic accident was identified as an off-duty police officer.*

Reports indicate that the officer was driving home from work when the accident took place. The victim was on the Highway 24 bridge that crosses over Lake Hartwell when a driver in an SUV veered across the center line and struck his car head-on. The woman in the SUV was identified as a 22-year-old. The young woman also sustained injuries in the wreck. At the time of his death, the officer was 60 years old. The victim served with the Anderson County Department for the last twelve years.

Head-on collisions are particularly deadly crashes because they involve intense forces. It is important to understand that if your car has a five-star frontal crash rating, that safety rating only indicates that your vehicle is effective in frontal collisions up to 40 mph with another vehicle of approximately the same size. It is somewhat shocking to realize that the risk of death in a head-on collision is high even when the cars involved are traveling at just 43 mph. Although road designers often include traffic barriers on roadways with higher speed limits, there are many roads with speed limits above 43 mph where the only thing dividing opposite traveling lanes of traffic are painted lines. Some consider these roads poorly designed. Safety advocates recommend that drivers avoid undivided roads with speed limits above 40 mph. Head-on collisions cause fewer deaths then side-impacts, but this is only because side-impact crashes are more common. Data indicates that head-on impacts are the deadliest form of crash.
