Head-On Crash Kills One on Highway 17 in Colleton County, South Carolina (SC)
COLLETON COUNTY, SC- Counton2.com writes that police in South Carolina are investigating a deadly head-on collision that took place early in the morning this week in Colleton County. The incident occurred on Highway 17 south of Wood Road in Green Pond. *
When responders arrived on the scene, they discovered that a Nissan Xterra had overturned in the roadway. A BMW was also on the site and had come to rest against a guardrail. Reports state that the Nissan was heading northbound while the BMW was traveling in the opposite direction. Officers currently do not know which of the vehicles struck the other. It appears that the incident occurred within the southbound lanes, but the debris from the collision lead crews to close all five lanes of traffic. Rescue workers reported that the impact of the crash caused the engine to break free from Nissan. The driver of the Nissan was unconscious when rescuers arrived on the scene. After freeing the victim from the vehicle, responders rushed the woman to the hospital. On the way, she went into cardiac arrest, causing medical workers to divert the ambulance to a closer medical facility. Sadly, the woman died at the Colleton Medical Center a short while after the collision. The driver in the BMW also suffered injuries in the crash, including an injury to his head. That individual's injuries are not considered life-threatening. Responders transported him to MUSC for treatment.
Head-on collisions cause a high rate of fatalities. About ten percent of car crash victims killed in the United States die in head-on impacts. This is true despite the fact that head-on crashes account for just two percent of all car crashes. Median barriers can help reduce the chance of a car entering the opposite traveling lanes of traffic.
