Motorcyclist Injured on Augusta Road in Burnettown, South Carolina (SC)

August 12, 2020

BURNETTOWN, SC- writes that a crash took place this week in Burnettown that left a motorcyclist with severe injuries. The incident occurred in the late evening on Augusta Road close to its intersection with Dixie Clay Road.*

A witness to the crash found the victim on the road and helped the man with a head injury and other injuries to his body. An ambulance rushed the man to a nearby hospital.

The victim's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Motorcycles, by their very nature, lack many of the safety features that come standard with cars. The lack of any vehicle enclosure is only one of many risks that these motorists face on the road. Two wheels make for a less stable vehicle than four, meaning that motorcyclists must use more skill, coordination, and balance to ride than that which is required of other drivers.

One main problem motorcyclists face that is out of their control is the fact that other drivers tend to overlook them. Because of their smaller size, drivers may fail to see a motorcycle, and the results can be deadly.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), motorcyclists can reduce risks to their safety by using a helmet. Head injuries lead to the largest proportion of fatalities among motorcyclists. A quality helmet will lower the risk of death by about 37 percent and is even more effective at reducing the chances of suffering a traumatic brain injury. While only nineteen states have laws stating that all motorcyclists must wear a helmet, the best reason to use one is not the law, but the fact that it may prevent a tragedy.
