Tragic Crash Kills One, Injures Three Children on Brattonsville Road in York County, South Carolina (SC)
YORK COUNTY, SC- Heraldonline.com writes that a woman died this week in a tragic wreck that occurred on Brattonsville Road in York County. The victim was identified as a 29-year-old woman from York. Reports indicate that the woman died at the scene of the crash.*
There were also three children in the car at the time, and all three suffered injuries. The names and ages of the children were not included in the accident report.
The incident took place overnight, and the car involved was a 2006 Honda.
When it comes to fatal car crashes, South Carolina comes in near the top of the list. One recent study placed the Palmetto State in third place in terms of states with the highest numbers of deadly crashes.
At least one part of the issue appears to be distracted driving, which is not as well controlled in South Carolina as it is in many other parts of the country. While some states issue thousands of distracted driving citations, South Carolina only cited 53 people in the course of a full year. In part, the issue is that the ban on texting that the state has in place is not a full hands-free law. When an officer pulls over a driver for using his or her phone while operating a motor vehicle, it is not enough to prove that the person was using their phone. The officer must show that the phone was used for the purpose of texting. Enforcing such a law is far more challenging than enforcing a ban on hand-held electronics.
Even when drivers were ticketed, the fine was a minimum of $25, which many suspect is not a strong enough deterrent to make motorists put down their phones.
