South Carolina is one of the worst states in the nation in terms of car crash deaths. Recent statistics indicate that the state is the third in the country when it comes to fatal collisions. There are a number of factors that are likely coming into play, including the fact that South Carolina has a weak distracted driving law. While texting and driving is not legally allowed in the state, there is not yet a full ban on handheld electronics. In situations where texting is illegal, but other phone uses are allowed, police officers often have trouble enforcing the ban on texting as proving for which purpose a person was using their phone is challenging.
In addition to the lack of a handheld ban, the fines for drivers who are caught texting behind the wheel are a minimum of $25. The small penalty may not be enough to deter drivers from engaging in this dangerous behavior. While distracted driving is clearly a problem, South Carolina also has a high rate of drunk driving-related fatalities. Alcohol is likely also contributing to the Palmetto State’s poor road safety.
