Tragic Crash Kills One on US Highway 601 in Bamberg County, South Carolina (SC)

July 28, 2020

BAMBERG COUNTY, SC- writes that a crash took place in Bamberg County this week that left one person dead. The incident occurred on US Highway 601 close to Clear Pond Road in the early evening.*

The victim was traveling in a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe when he left the southbound lanes and entered oncoming northbound traffic. The SUV collided head-on with a 2014 Freightliner truck. The victim was a man from Bamberg. After the impact, the truck, which was carrying sod, caught fire. While the cab ignited, the trailer did not. The driver in the truck sustained injuries and was rushed to the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. The man in the Tahoe died at the crash site. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.

This year, 495 people have already died in crashes in South Carolina. According to data, at the same point in time, in 2019, 519 people were killed.

The tragic crash was the first this year for the county. No one was killed in Bamberg County in traffic incidents last year.

This year may see fewer collisions simply because there is less traffic on the road thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. In April, fewer people were killed in collisions in the Palmetto State because the stay at home directive meant that most people were not out driving. In total, 927 people were killed in crashes in South Carolina in 2019. Police are hoping that that number will be reduced in 2020. Some are fairly optimistic that the numbers will be lower because the first few months of the year were lower even prior to the lockdown.
