Woman Killed in Boating Crash on Lake Murray in South Carolina (SC)
LEXINGTON County, SC- Wltx.com writes that a crash took place this week in South Carolina that left one person dead. The incident occurred overnight in Lake Murray when a boat heading into dock crashed into a dead tree. Reports indicate that the engine cut off, causing the operator to lose control of the vessel. While the operator attempted to restart the boat, the dead tree fell onto the passenger.*
The victim was identified as a 20-year-old woman from Statesboro, Georgia. The county coroner states that the woman was declared dead at the hospital from blunt force trauma.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The deadly crash was not the only incident on the state’s waterways this week. A crash involving a pontoon boat and a bass boat took place in Saluda County. That crash led to four people suffering injuries. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash but stated that alcohol was not a contributing factor.
A third accident occurred in Greenville County when a sixteen-foot vessel towing a tube caused the tube to strike a docked boat. Two juveniles were on the tube at the time. One of the victims is now reportedly in critical condition while the other sustained a broken leg. That accident is also still under investigation.
Boating can be a fun way to spend time outside with family and friends. However, no one should forget that this pastime can be extremely dangerous when people are not careful. The National Safety Council writes that boating accidents kill hundreds of people in the United States every year and injure thousands more.
