Tragic Crash Kills Teen on Sardis Road North in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC)

July 15, 2020

CHARLOTTE, NC- Wcnc.com writes that a collision took place in Charlotte, North Carolina, this week that left a teenager dead and injured two others. The incident occurred early in the morning on Sardis Road.*

The vehicle involved, a Toyota SUV, reportedly rolled over, and a passenger in the backseat of the car was killed. The victim, identified as a sixteen-year-old girl, died at the scene. Police stated that the 2007 RAV4 was spotted speeding down the roadway prior to striking a power pole. A fifteen-year-old was reportedly the driver, and in addition to the victim, another passenger, also a teen, was in the car. The driver and the front-seat passenger were both injured in the incident and were rushed to the Atrium Health Main for treatment. The occupants all had their seatbelts on at the time of the crash. The driver was later released from the hospital and taken into police custody. The teen is facing multiple charges in relation to the crash, including felony death by motor vehicle, DWI, and reckless driving. Reports state that the cause of the crash included alcohol, drugs, and excessive speed.

Teenage drivers face a higher risk of being involved in a crash than do other motorists. Adding alcohol to inexperience is often a tragic combination. Overall, alcohol played a role in 29 percent of fatal collisions in 2018. More than sixteen percent of teens nationwide state that they drove with an alcohol-impaired driver at least one time in the last month.

Teenagers have a lower rate of drunk driving than do adults, but teens who are drinking have a much higher chance of being involved in a serious collision. It is important for parents to talk to their teens about the dangers of drunk driving, and to let their children know they can always call for a ride home.
