Driver in U Haul Damages Ten or More Cars in Newberry County, South Carolina

July 12, 2020

NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC- Wach.com writes that a driver operating a U Haul damaged a total at least ten vehicles across two South Carolina counties in what appears to have been a case of severe road rage. The driver is now facing multiple charges, including assault and battery, and fleeing the scene of a crash.*

The police stated that the man caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage during his rampage. The events began on South Carolina Highway 213 and US 176 when the suspect stopped his truck on the roadway and refused to let a driver pass him. After the other motorist made multiple attempts to pass, and after the suspect swerved at the other vehicle, the other motorist tried to turn around. At that point, the man in the U Haul put the truck in reverse and backed into the other car before turning around and striking the other vehicle head-on. At that point, the suspect then fled the scene and sped away, heading eastbound. As the driver fled, he struck another nine vehicles, and possibly more. According to investigating officers, the driver intended to strike the other vehicles. As far as police can tell, the driver did not know any other people in the other vehicles that he targeted as he drove down the highway.

According to the first driver, he had not encountered the suspect until the man had stopped and blocked the roadway. Currently, investigators believe that none of the victims had any connection to the suspect.

Studies indicate that road rage has been increasing for several years. Deadly collisions caused by aggressive motorists increased 500 percent in the matter of a decade.
