Severe Multiple Vehicle Crash Slows Traffic on Interstate 85 in Anderson County, South Carolina (SC)
ANDERSON COUNTY, SC - The independentmail.com writes that a severe wreck led to lengthy delays this week on Interstate 85 in Anderson County. The incident, which involved four vehicles, including a recreational vehicle and an 18-wheel truck. The collision resulted in a fire in the southbound lanes causing a four-hour traffic backup.*
Firefighters worked to clear the wreckage and wash the burnt pavement before reopening the road for traffic. Tow trucks were working on the scene to remove vehicles, and drivers exited their cars to walk around while they waited to be able to move.
A tow truck first left with a badly damaged Subaru, which appeared to have been struck in its rear.
Most states do not require that drivers undergo any specialized training in order to operate a recreational vehicle or RV. The lack of experience increases the risk of drivers being involved in a collision in these massive and unwieldy vehicles.
RVs have large blind spots, which makes it more difficult for drivers to see their surroundings and identify risks. They also require a long time to stop as compared to passenger vehicles. Many factors increase the risk of an RV being involved in a crash, including heavy winds, poorly balanced loads, and problems caused by drivers overloading the vehicles. Speeding can also cause issues, as with drivers in any type of vehicle. The high center of gravity also makes RVs prone to rolling over.
When drivers are not experienced, elderly, or overtired, there can be more risks involved in RV operating.
On average, 26 people die in RV accidents each year.
