ANDERSON COUNTY, SC- Wyff4.com writes that one person died in a crash that occurred this week during the afternoon in Anderson County. Reports indicate that the mid-afternoon incident took place on Interstate 85.*
An SUV with out-of-state plates was heading southbound when the driver collided with a center median. The impact led to the vehicle overturning multiple times. When the SUV finally came to a rest, it ignited. A passenger in the vehicle was ejected in the incident. A man in the vehicle suffered severe injuries and was transported to the hospital via airlift. The victim was identified as an individual from Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Rollover crashes are some of the deadliest incidents on the road. According to Consumer Reports, about three percent of crashes involve a rollover, and yet, these incidents cause about 30 percent of deadly collisions. While any type of vehicle may roll in extreme circumstances, the risks are higher for automobiles with top-heavy designs. Studies indicate that SUVs are more inclined to roll over than sedans. Pickup trucks and vans also carry a greater risk of rolling over.
Newer vehicles that are equipped with electronic stability control are better at helping drivers avoid being in these types of collisions. Drivers should also ensure that their tires are in good condition and properly inflated prior to setting off on the road. Overloading a vehicle can also make it more likely to overturn.
In order to survive these terrible crashes, motorists should always use their seatbelts. Unrestrained occupants are often ejected in rollovers. Vehicle ejections lead to death about three-quarters of the time.
