One Killed in Tragic Crash on Interstate 85 in Anderson County, South Carolina (SC)

July 09, 2020

ANDERSON COUNTY, SC- Wspa.com writes that one person was killed in a crash on Interstate 85 in the afternoon this week, and another individual is now in critical condition. The incident took place in the middle of the afternoon ten miles from Anderson.*

The driver was heading south when he or she struck a median and then veered back into the road before rolling over. The car then struck a cable barrier and ignited. A passenger in the car was ejected in the wreck and died at the crash site. The driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital via airlift. The victim was later identified as a 76-year-old man from Lawrenceville. Reports did not include the identity of the driver.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that when people are ejected from cars, they are almost always killed as a result. The best way to prevent being thrown from a moving or overturning car is to buckle up. Airbags are not enough to protect occupants in the absence of a seatbelt, and in fact, can cause additional harm to those who are not restrained.

Rollover collisions are particularly severe, especially when cars are traveling at high rates of speed. Most deadly rollover accidents take place when cars are driving on roads with 55 miles per hour posted speed limits. About 40 percent of deadly rollovers involve a driver who is speeding excessively. Alcohol is also a common contributing factor in rollover collisions. About half of these incidents are caused by drunk drivers. Taller vehicles have a more significant risk of rolling.
