June 30, 2020

GRANITEVILLE, SC- writes that a worker was killed at a manufacturing plant in Aiken County this week. The incident took place at the Bridgestone-Firestone plant located in Graniteville. The United States averages 4.4 fatalities, on average, per 100,000 workers. The safest state when it comes to work-related fatalities is Washington, with an average of 2.7 deaths per 100,000. The deadliest state is Wyoming, with an average of 10.9 fatalities per 100,000 workers.

South Carolina has experienced an increase in the number of fatal work-related accidents. In 2016, the state hit a recent low in its number of worker deaths, with an average of 4.8 deaths per 100,000 workers. Sadly, the numbers have been rising since that point, and in 2019, the number increased to 6.9 per 100,000, which is significantly higher than the national average.

Most work-related deaths are completely preventable tragedies. Through the 1900s, work-related safety became an increasingly important issue in the United States, and great improvements were made throughout many industries. Employers play a major role in making their work environments as safe as possible for employees. By providing workers with the necessary training and protective equipment, employers can reduce the chances of accidents occurring and causing injuries and fatalities. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been instrumental in reducing the prevalence of work-related injuries and deaths throughout the country over the last four decades. Since 1970, the number of worker fatalities declined from 38 every day to fourteen.
