Former Florida State Student Dies in Fall Off Frat House Roof

June 28, 2020

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Weartv.com writes that a former student from the Florida State University died this week after falling off of a fraternity house roof. The 21-year-old victim's name was not released, but reports stated that the young man was a former student at the university.*

The victim's body was found by a meter reader. Officers have not confirmed whether the fatal incident was an accident. Investigators are still working to determine what transpired. The house is used by the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and two members stated that the victim had been a fraternity leader. They also stated that he was a member of the Army Reserves and that he was meant to be deployed to Afghanistan next fall.

Reporters stated that there appeared to be empty beer cans in a box on the roof. Last fall, the fraternity was placed under suspension after certain alcohol-related violations were alleged against the organization. The probation ended this spring.

Police did not indicate that hazing was in any way related to the tragic incident but have not revealed whether alcohol was involved.

Fraternities have a long history of hazing and alcohol-related deaths. Between 2007 and 2017, 40 people died in hazing-related incidents. The leading cause of death in these tragedies is alcohol poisoning.

In one recent case, a freshman at Cornell was found dead after a fraternity party. The fraternity event involved copious amounts of alcohol, which freshmen were urged to drink. The boy was found dead in a gorge days after the event. The family of the eighteen-year-old boy has now filed a lawsuit against the fraternity, several students, and the university.
