Tragic Accident Kills One at Bridgestone Plant in Graniteville, South Carolina (SC)

GRANTITEVILLE, GA- Aikenstandard.com writes that a workplace accident took place this week in Graniteville. The incident occurred at the Bridgestone warehouse.*

The worker, identified as a 58-year-old man from Thomson, Georgia, was a contractor. The accident was reported in the morning, and the victim died from his injuries at the Augusta University Medical Center in the early afternoon. The company has not revealed details regarding the fatal incident, which is currently being investigated. 

Thousands of Americans are killed in workplace accidents every year, and according to the National Safety Council, the majority of these tragic events are preventable.  In 2017, 5,147 people lost their lives in work-related accidents. The numbers average out to fourteen people dying in these incidents each day. 

The deadliest jobs appear to be driving-related, and 987 people were killed in these occupations in 2017. The second deadliest jobs are in agriculture and farming, and third is grounds maintenance, roofers are fourth and fifth are pilots and flight engineers. 

The vast majority of victims are men. 

Injuries are also common in the workplace. In fact, a worker is injured on average once every seven seconds totaling 4,600,000 worker injuries each year. Many people lose time at work because of injuries. The top five industries for work-related injuries include service, which includes firefighters and police officers, followed by transportation, manufacturing, maintenance and repair, and finally, construction. Employers are responsible for making workplaces safe for their employees. 

When employers fail to keep employees safe, they are often investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). If OSHA finds a violation, the employer may face steep penalties.
