Pedestrian Crash Tragically Kills One on Anderson Road in Greenville County, South Carolina (SC)
GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC- Foxcarolina.com writes that a pedestrian was killed in a crash this week while attempting to cross Anderson Road in the late evening. The incident occurred close to East Wilburn Avenue.*
The vehicle involved was identified as a Buick SUV. The identity of the victim was not released.
Pedestrian crashes are occurring on a regular basis in South Carolina. A recent report found that the state is the sixth deadliest in the nation for pedestrians. While South Carolina has seen a rise in deadly pedestrian incidents, the number of people dying nationwide has also been increasing each year. The numbers from 2018 were the highest in close to 30 years.
The rising number of fatal pedestrian crashes is leading some in the state to look at ways to make the roads safer. Local officers lament the fact that many of these tragic incidents are preventable. Pedestrians are often killed outside of crosswalks. Using a designated crossing reduces the risk of being killed in a wreck.
While it is important for pedestrians to use crosswalks when available, in many cases, the infrastructure is failing to protect vulnerable road users. Making improvements to the many dangerous roads in the state will, unfortunately, be expensive and time-consuming. Many pedestrian incidents occur at night, indicating that poor lighting is a leading factor in many of these crashes.
A “complete streets” program could help make the roads better suited for foot traffic and cyclists. Getting the work completed will take time and effort, but some safety advocates are encouraged by the momentum they feel now backing these initiatives.
