Pedestrian Crash Kills One on Blakely Road in Williamsburg County, South Carolina (SC)
WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, SC- Live5news.com writes that one person was killed in a tragic pedestrian crash in Williamsburg County this week. The incident took place in the late evening on Blakely Road near Salters. The driver involved in the crash was operating a 2014 Buick and heading southbound at the time of the incident. The victim was standing in the roadway, according to police reports.
Responders rushed the pedestrian to the hospital for treatment, but the individual died a short while later. The names of the driver and the victim involved have not been released at this time. The incident is still being investigated.
Sadly, pedestrian crashes are continuing to occur regularly throughout the country. According to a report by the Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA), these crashes appear to have gone up last year by five percent as compared to 2018. If the estimates are accurate, the number of people killed in pedestrian collisions in the United States was higher last year than it was at any point in the last 30 years.
The reason for the rise in these accidental fatalities includes the American consumer’s choice of vehicle. Studies indicate that light trucks, including SUVs, are about two times as likely to kill pedestrians as a car would be in the same situation.
A study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety confirmed the fact that SUVs and crossovers are more likely to cause deadly crashes than are smaller cars.
There are, of course, other possible causes for the rise in fatal pedestrian incidents. Distractions related to smartphones are almost certainly a contributing factor, and some claim that even changes in the weather could be leading to more people walking.
