Piedmont Highway Crash Tragically Kills One in South Carolina (SC)

GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC- Wspa.com writes that a man was killed this week in a collision involving a motorcycle and a car. The incident took place in Greenville County on Piedmont Highway near the intersection with Bracken Road.*

A car was pulling out of Rest Haven Memorial Gardens entered the path of the motorcycle. Responders rushed the victim to the hospital, where he died after undergoing emergency surgery. The victim was identified as a 50-year-old man from Greenville. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is carrying out the investigation. 

In 2018, 4,985 motorcyclists were killed in crashes in the United States. While motorcyclists still account for a disproportionately large number of traffic victims, these deaths dropped five percent in 2018 as compared to 2017. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that motorcyclists are 28 times as likely to be killed in traffic crashes than are people in other types of vehicles. There are ways that the NHTSA recommends that motorcyclists always use a helmet that meets the safety standards of the Department of Transportation. A DOT symbol is located on the back of helmets that qualify. Riding a motorcycle is more challenging than operating a car. As such, the NHTSA also states that riders are properly licensed and have the experience and skill necessary to operate their vehicles.

Of course, even skilled motorcyclists cannot account for the actions of other drivers. Around half of motorcycle deaths involve collisions with other vehicles. It is important that drivers use caution and learn to share the road with smaller vehicles. Studies indicate that two-thirds of multiple-vehicle motorcycle crashes are the result of drivers entering the motorcyclist's right of way.
