Crash in Ladson, South Carolina Leads to Traffic Delays

June 11, 2020

LADSON, SC- Counton2.com writes that a collision in Ladson led to significant traffic delays in on Interstate 26. Drivers in the area were asked to take the Ashley Phosphate Road exit and to avoid the area.*

The details regarding the crash are limited, but significant traffic delays were witnessed on the interstate.

South Carolina has some of the nation's deadliest roadways. The per capita rate of fatal car crashes makes the Palmetto State the third state on the list for traffic deaths. The only places where drivers face a greater danger of being killed in crashes are Mississippi and Alabama.

The numbers come from a study published about distracted driving rates. At least a part of the problem appears to be that South Carolina has done comparatively little to prevent drivers from operating their cars while looking at their phones or being otherwise distracted. The minimum fine, which was set at $25, does not deter people from distracted driving. Additionally, very few citations are actually written for these violations.

Unfortunately, distracted drivers are not the only common threat to people on the road in South Carolina. A recent report found that the state is fifth in the country in drunk driving deaths. States that have higher rates of drunk driving include Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana.

In 2018, the state lost 291 people in fatal drunk driving crashes in South Carolina. The rate of drunk driving deaths per 100,000 people was 5.72. While the death rate is high, the number of arrests for impaired driving is lower than in many other states. North Carolina was farther down the list in fifteenth place.
