Crash Reported in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina (SC)

June 11, 2020

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC- writes that a car accident occurred in Mount Pleasant this week during the afternoon. The incident involved three vehicles that collided near the area of Coaxum Road and Long Point Road. Reports indicate that individuals were injured in the accident. *

South Carolina is at the top of the list when it comes to deadly collisions. One study found that the Palmetto State is third in the country when it comes to car crash deaths. The numbers accounted for population size and found that the state sustained 20.5 fatalities for every 100,000 people. The only states with records for deadly wrecks that were worse than South Carolina were Mississippi, and Alabama. In Mississippi, there were 23.1 crash fatalities per 100,000 people, and in Alabama, there were 21.3.

The study criticized South Carolina for its poor performance in terms of preventing distracted driving. Distracted driving, which often involves cellphones or smartphones, is a major threat to road safety. South Carolina only issued 53 tickets in the course of an entire year for drivers who were violating distracted driving laws. The minimum fine for those violations is just $25 and is viewed by some as inadequate as a deterrent.

The state of Delaware issued the most citations with a total of 13,061. The fine in that state is $100.

Safety studies find a link between lax distracted driving laws and the risk of people being killed in car crashes. For individuals who are concerned about road safety, it is important to lead by example and commit to putting phones away before starting to operate a vehicle. Keeping a phone out of reach and sight can help avoid the temptation to look at the screen while driving.
