Tragic Skydiving Accident Kills One in Chester County South Carolina
CHESTER COUNTY, SC- Wbtv.com writes that a tragic accident led to the death of a young man in South Carolina this week. The incident occurred at Skydive Carolina when the twenty-year-old man from Naples, Florida, struck an aircraft.*
According to the owner of the company, the victim's jump was normal, and the parachute went off properly. The accident took place on the ground when the young man hit the plane. For the time being, the company is closing its operations. The owner expressed his grief over the tragedy and stated that his prayers are with the family. The company has been in business for 34 years. Reports indicate that the facility has experienced multiple fatal accidents in the last few years. A woman was killed just last summer at the same location.
Skydiving has become safer over time, and in 2018, the sport reported its lowest ever number of deaths. During that year, only thirteen people died in skydiving accidents in the United States. In the 1970s, the sport lost 42.5 people every year. Not only are the numbers down, but the number of jumps has increased during that time as well, indicating that the risk has declined significantly. Tandem skydiving has an even better safety record.
The industry has strict safety standards and intensive training requirements that are proving effective at limiting the risk of injury and death. The equipment is also becoming better and safer over the years.
While there are always risks involved in skydiving, most of the fatalities are the result of human mistakes. The risk can be drastically decreased when the participants are cautious.
