Crash Injures Five on Highway 544 in Horry County, South Carolina (SC)

June 07, 2020

HORRY COUNTY, SC- Wmbfnews.com writes that a collision on Highway 544 injured three people this week near Conway. The wreck occurred in the afternoon close to Coastal Carolina University.*

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is working on the investigation into the collision. Officials asked motorists to find alternate routes while investigators and responders worked at the scene. Reports did not release the identities of those involved in a crash or provide information regarding the condition of the injured individuals.

Traffic crashes are common in South Carolina, and according to some studies, the state is at the top of the list in terms of traffic deaths. One study found South Carolina was third in the country when it comes to the states where people are most likely to be killed in a vehicle collision.

This year, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety created a website that is designed to provide public access to current information regarding traffic fatalities. The traffic fatality dashboard shows both statewide data as well as the numbers by county. A map also shows the places where crashes occurred and provides information on whether people were using their seatbelts at the time of these crashes.

According to the site, so far this year, 345 people have died in car crashes in South Carolina. The number of deaths dropped by 75 as compared to the same time in 2019. Of that total, 242 had access to seatbelts, and yet, 132 did not have their belts buckled at the time of the deadly crash.

There were 57 pedestrian deaths, four cyclist fatalities, and 32 motorcycle deaths. All of those categories showed a decline as compared to last year as well.
