Driver Killed in Tragic Head-On Collision in Modoc, South Carolina (SC)

June 04, 2020

MODOC, SC- Wrdw.com writes that a crash killed one person on US Highway 221 this week. The incident involved four vehicles that crashed in the morning close to the Hamilton Beach Park.*

The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that the wreck occurred when a southbound Ford Edge veered across the center of the highway and into the northbound lanes of traffic. The Ford collided head-on with a large truck. The impact caused the driver in the Ford to become trapped inside of the vehicle. Responders extricated the individual, but the person was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

Two other vehicles, including a Nissan Altima that was driving northbound and a log truck that was driving southbound, were struck with debris from the impact.

The drivers were the only people in any of the vehicles involved in the incident.

While head-on collisions are rare events, they often result in fatal injuries. Only about two percent of crashes reported involve head-on impacts, and yet about one in ten car crash fatalities are the result of this type of wreck. Road engineers sometimes take steps to prevent these incidents from happening by putting medians or other barriers in place between traffic lanes to prevent cars from traveling across the center line and into oncoming vehicles. In some instances, the medians themselves then become something that cars might strike and which could be viewed as an obstacle for motorists. However, on high-speed roadways, the more severe fatal crashes are frequently prevented by barriers. The collisions and resulting injuries from crashes with the barriers are typically less severe than a high-speed head-on collision would have been.
