Cyclist Dies in Tragic Crash in Florence County, South Carolina (SC)

June 04, 2020

FLORENCE, SC- writes that a cyclist was killed in a crash in Florence County this week in the late evening. The incident took place at Isgett Road's intersection with Old River Road.*

The vehicle involved in the crash was identified as a 2007 Lexus sedan. The motorist and the cyclist were both traveling north when the Lexus collided with the back of the bike. The impact killed the cyclist. Reports did not include the identities of the individuals involved in the crash.

When cars strike cyclists, the people on bikes have an obvious disadvantage. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2018, 857 people lost their lives because cars struck them while they were riding their bikes.

One way for cyclists to increase their safety is to use a helmet. The NHTSA writes that helmets must fit properly in order to work effectively.

It is important that cyclists follow traffic laws and obey all signs and signals in the same way as a car. By following these laws, cyclists' actions will be more predictable, and there will be fewer opportunities for something to go wrong.

Of course, keeping cyclists safe on the road also requires that drivers remember to share the roads and keep a lookout for cyclists. Drivers should always travel at or below the speed limit and drive defensively when they are near cyclists. It is important to give cyclists plenty of room on the road and never to pass too close to a person on a bike. In situations where it is possible to do so, motorists should change lanes to give extra space to bikes.
