Tragic Crash Reported in York County, South Carolina (SC)

May 20, 2020

YORK COUNTY, SC- writes that a tragic crash occurred in York County this week during the early morning. The crash occurred on Adnah Church Road at its intersection with Windsong Lane.*

Reports indicate that a driver in a Chevrolet Malibu was traveling southbound when it crossed the center line in the road and collided head-on with a pickup truck that was traveling northbound. The driver in the Malibu died at the scene of the wreck. The person in the pickup truck suffered injuries and was transported to the hospital.Police have yet to release the name of the individuals involved in the crash.

Head-on collisions occur when the front of one car collides with the front of another vehicle. In the United States, only about two percent of all collisions involve a head-on impact, and yet, these instances account for more than ten percent of all deadly wrecks. Head-on crashes are one type of lane-departure crash, along with sideswipes and road departure wrecks. The causes of all of these instances are similar, and yet they have very different outcomes.

One way to prevent these types of crashes is to add medians, which prevent drivers from crossing into oncoming traffic. While these barriers can often be a road hazard, the consequences of striking a median are often far less devastating than the consequences of colliding with an oncoming vehicle.

One of the rarer forms of a head-on crash is a wrong-way collision in which a driver enters a divided road heading in the wrong direction. Road engineers put a great deal of effort into preventing motorists from making this type of fatal mistake.
