Motorcyclist Killed in Tragic Hit-and-Run Crash in Abbeville, South Carolina (SC)

May 20, 2020

ABBEVILLE, SC- Wyff4.com writes that a fatal crash involving a motorcyclist took place in Abbeville County this week. The incident occurred in the evening on SC-20 close to Hill Road.*

News reports indicate that the victim was on a Harley Davidson motorcycle and traveling eastbound on the highway when a westbound utility truck crossed over the center line in the road and struck the motorcyclist head-on. The victim, identified as a 67-year-old man, died at the scene of the crash. The man operating the utility truck then reportedly fled the scene of the crash before returning at a later time. Police have since arrested and charged the 25-year-old Abbeville man who was operating the utility truck. He is facing multiple charges, including felony DUI and fleeing the scene of a crash involving death.

Drunk driving leads to about 30 fatalities every day in the United States. Each year, impaired motorists cause more than 10,000 fatalities. While drunk driving has decreased a great deal, these motorists still cause about 29 percent of all deadly car crashes.

Alcohol severely impairs a person’s ability to safely operate a vehicle. The Blood Alcohol Concentration, or BAC, measures the amount of alcohol in a person’s system. Drivers are not permitted to have a BAC of .08 or more when they are operating a vehicle. However, even at lower levels, it is possible that alcohol can impair a person’s driving abilities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that in 2018, 1,878 people died in crashes that involved motorists who had a BAC that fell below .08 percent alcohol per volume, but at or above .01 percent.
