Police Officer Suffered Injuries Berkeley County While Responding to Call

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC- Counton2.com writes that a police officer was involved in a collision on Old Highway 52 in the early afternoon this week while responding to the scene of a possible shooting. The officer was headed to a call from Oakley Road at the time of the wreck. The shooting turned out to have been an accident in which the gun had fired unintentionally.* 

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the crash left the deputy trapped inside of his police car for about 40 minutes while emergency responders endeavored to free him. After being extricated, the injured officer was transported to the Trident Medical Center for treatment. 

The other driver involved in the collision was in a white pickup truck. That person also suffered injuries and was transported to the same medical facility. No details regarding the severity or nature of either of the victims’ injuries were released other than that both were said to have been conscious when they were taken from the scene. 

The South Carolina Highway Patrol stated that the truck, which was owned by the Berkeley County School District, was making a left turn into a school maintenance office when the police car was heading straight, causing the two vehicles to collide. 

Based on the images from the scene, the pickup truck sustained severe damage to its front driver’s side, and the rear part of the truck was completely separated from the cabin. The police vehicle appears to have overturned before landing on its driver’s side. The extent of the damage to both of the vehicles indicates that the crash involved a heavy impact.
