Tragic Crash Kills Pedestrian in Greenwood County, South Carolina (SC)

May 18, 2020

GREENWOOD COUNTY, SC- Foxcarolina.com writes that a pedestrian died in a crash in South Carolina this week. The early morning incident took place in Greenwood County on US-25. The vehicle involved was reportedly traveling northbound close to SC-254 when it collided with the person, who was walking north at the time.*

The victim died a short while after being struck by the 2010 Chevrolet Impala. The man killed in the wreck was from Johnson. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to conduct an investigation into the fatal crash.

Fatal pedestrian crashes are occurring more often around that nation, and South Carolina has ranked in sixth out of all fifty states when it comes to these tragic incidents. The ranking considers population size and found that the number of deaths per 100,000 in the state placed the Palmetto State at the top of the list. Over the past six years, more than 900 people died in these accidents in South Carolina.

Police officers in the state often lament the tragic fact that so many of these incidents could easily have been prevented. For instance, many people are struck by cars while crossing the road outside of a crosswalk. Using a crosswalk if one is available can help lower the risk of not being noticed by a driver.

A significant part of the problem is the state's infrastructure, which could be designed to better prioritize pedestrian safety. South Carolina has been gathering data to identify the most dangerous locations and the ones that will require safety improvements and additional traffic law enforcement efforts. Educating the public about road safety will also be a part of the plan to reduce the number of tragic pedestrian crashes that occur each year in South Carolina.
