Pickup Truck Strikes Motorcyclist in Tragic Crash in Clover, South Carolina (SC)

CLOVER, SC- Fox46charlotte.com writes that a crash between a pickup truck and a motorcycle left a motorcyclist dead this week in Clover. Police in York County responded to the scene of the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Oakridge Road and Riddle Mill Road.*

The victim was identified as a 54-year-old man from Rock Hill. The motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene of the wreck. Reports indicate that the truck struck the motorcycle. South Carolina police are now investigating the incident, and toxicology reports are still pending. 

Motorcycle crashes killed 4,985 people in the United States in 2018. The number indicates a drop of about five percent. Statistically, people on motorcycles are more likely to be killed than people traveling in cars or trucks. In fact, the risk of death for a motorcyclist is about 28 times as high as the risk for a person in a passenger vehicle. 

Some ways for motorcyclists to increase their safety include using a helmet and other protective gear. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists should use helmets that are approved by the United States Department of Transportation. Motorcyclists can check the back of a helmet for a DOT symbol to ensure that it meets the standards set by that organization. 

Bright clothing is also important to increase motorcyclist safety. Reflective materials are helpful because they make it more likely that drivers will notice the motorcyclist on the road. 

Of course, as with operating any vehicle, it is important to stay sober when riding. Alcohol and drugs will impair a person’s ability to operate a motorcycle by affecting their judgment, balance, coordination, reaction time, and alertness.
