Tragic, Fatal Motorcycle Accident on Oak Ridge Road in York County, South Carolina (SC)

April 14, 2020

YORK COUNTY, SC- Heraldonline.com writes that a crash between a motorcyclist and an SUV left one person dead. The incident occurred in the mid-afternoon on Oak Ridge Road near the border of North Carolina.*

The motorcyclist was traveling eastbound when an SUV turned onto Oak Ridge Road. Reports indicate that person on the motorcycle died at the scene of the crash.

Police are still investigating the incident. Officials stated that this was the twelfth motorcycle fatality in South Carolina this year. By this time last year, there were sixteen fatal motorcycle crashes at the same point in time. Total fatalities this yeah hit 195, which is a drop of 51 people as compared to the same point in time last year.

When it comes to motorcycles, the risk of a crash resulting in a fatality is higher than it is for people in passenger cars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety writes that motorcycles are not as stable as four-wheeled vehicles and that they are at a greater risk of being involved in a crash when trying to carry out various maneuvers, such as swerving or emergency braking. These vehicles are also not as easy to see on the road.

Of course, motorcycles are also more dangerous because they lack the safety provided by an enclosed structure. Safety advocates say that anti-lock brakes are one way to make a motorcycle safer. Motorcycles equipped with anti-lock brakes are about 31 percent less likely to be involved in a deadly crash than a motorcycle without this safety feature.
