Tragic Log Truck Crash Fatality Confirmed in Greenville, South Carolina (SC)
GREENVILLE, SC- Foxcarolina.com writes that a crash occurred this week involving a log truck and a car. The incident took place in Greenville on White Horse Road at its intersection with Lynch Drive in the mid-morning.*
Reports indicate that the log truck was traveling south when the car pulled onto White Horse Road. The truck collided with the smaller vehicle, and the impact mangled the victim’s car. Responders had to extricate the trapped individual from their car. The victim was then rushed to the hospital but died a short while later.
According to the coroner, the victim was a 59-year-old man.
Large truck crashes kill thousands of people every year. The victims in these collisions are often people traveling in other vehicles, not those inside of the trucks. In 2018, large truck collisions left 4,136 people dead. Of that total, 67 percent were occupants of passenger vehicles. Another fifteen percent were motorcyclists, cyclists, or pedestrians. When viewing only those collisions that involved both a truck and a passenger vehicle, the victim was in the passenger vehicle 96 percent of the time.
The risks posed by these massive vehicles include the fact that they are between twenty and 30 times as heavy as other cars. Additionally, drivers are often traveling for long distances, and by law, truckers can drive for up to eleven hours at a time.
Because of their size, large trucks require great distances to come to a complete stop. This, too, makes these vehicles more dangerous to others on the road. The stopping distances are even more of an issue in situations where the roads are wet or slick.
