Pedestrian Suffers Severe Injuries in Orangeburg Hit-and-Run Crash in Orangeburg County, South Carolina (SC)

March 26, 2020

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC- Abcnews4.com writes that a pedestrian suffered severe injuries in a crash that took place in Orangeburg County. The incident involved a hit-and-run driver who struck the victim at the intersection of Whittaker Parkway and Myers Road.*

The crash occurred in the later evening. Police stated that the vehicle is believed to have been a black 2016 Chevrolet Malibu. The car may be missing its side mirror and have damage to its driver’s side. Reports did not include information regarding the condition of the victim. Officers are requesting that anyone with information about the crash contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred just one day after another hit-and-run driver left a pedestrian dead in Charleston County, South Carolina. In the earlier collision, which took place in Hollywood on Highway 165, the victim, identified as a man, was found dead in the roadway. Reports indicate that a citizen notified the police of the body, and police arrived on the scene where they closed the road for several hours as they investigated the incident.

While the driver fled following the crash, debris from the vehicle was left on the road, and officers are working to identify the driver and the involved vehicle.

Deadly hit-and-run crashes are increasing throughout the country. The AAA states that the percent of crash deaths made up of pedestrians and cyclists is on the rise. Drivers are more likely to flee after a pedestrian crash simply because they can. In fact, about one in five pedestrian fatalities involves a driver who fled the scene. South Carolina ranked ninth place out of all states when it comes to fatal hit-and-run collisions.
