DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC- Abcnews4.com writes that a crash took place in Darlington County between an SUV and a truck. The incident occurred when the SUV was traveling northbound on Green Street.*
According to police, the trucker was traveling east on High Hill Road and failed to yield to the SUV at the intersection with Green. The collision killed the driver in the SUV. The identity of the victim has not yet been released. The truck driver also suffered injuries in the crash and was transported to a nearby hospital.
So far, there is no information regarding what if any charges will be filed in relation to the crash.
Large truck crashes tend to be most dangerous to people in other vehicles. When it comes to these collisions, people traveling in passenger cars are in a vulnerable position as the large trucks are about twenty if not 30 times larger and heavier. One problem that contributes to the chances of one of these crashes occurring is that truckers drive for long periods of time. The law permits truck drivers to travel at up to eleven hours in one stretch. According to surveys, it is not uncommon for drivers to violate these laws and travel for longer intervals than permitted. Fatigue is, therefore, a factor in some truck crashes.
Another common issue is that these massive vehicles require more time to come to a stop than smaller cars. If the truck is not well maintained, then the brakes may not function properly, leading to even longer stop times. Wet roads make stopping in a truck even more of a challenge.
