Three Vehicle Crash Involving Fatal Medical Emergency in Woodbridge, South Carolina

March 24, 2020

WOODBRIDGE, SC- Potomaclocal.com writes that a man died in a crash in Woodbridge this week on Village Road. The incident occurred in the mid-afternoon and involved three vehicles.*

Reports indicate that a 2015 Dodge Ram was traveling eastbound when the pickup truck veered off the roadway. The vehicle then drove into a parking lot where it collided with a 2012 Toyota Rav 4, pushing that car into a light post. The pickup then struck a 2012 Dodge Charger before coming to a stop.

Witnesses at the scene attempted to assist the driver in the Dodge Ram until the authorities arrived on the scene. It appears that the victim suffered some sort of medical episode while operating his pickup truck. The man was declared dead a short while after the collisions. The victim was 59 years old and was from Woodbridge.

Crashes caused by medical emergencies are not common. One study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that only a little more than one percent of crashes are the result of a medical emergency. When a medical condition does cause a crash, the likely causes of that collision include blackouts, seizures, and diabetic reactions. In fact, these conditions led to about 84 percent of all medical emergency-related wrecks.

The majority of drivers who suffer from a medical condition while driving had knowledge of the condition prior to the crash. The NHTSA states that patient education is important in preventing these incidents. Research also indicates that Drowsy Driver Warning Systems may reduce the risks of these accidents, as may lane departure prevention technology.
