Two-Vehicle Crash Severely Injures Woman and Juvenile in Charlotte, North Carolina

March 24, 2020

CHARLOTTE, NC- Wbtv.com writes that a two-vehicle collision led to a woman and a child sustaining severe injuries. Two-vehicles were involved in the incident. The woman's injuries were described as life-threatening. The child sustained severe injuries but is expected to survive. Both of the victims were transported to the hospital. Reports indicate that the incident occurred at the intersection of Slit Oak Road and Lawyers Road. The roads were closed following the wreck. The reports do not reveal the cause of the crash, nor do they provide information regarding the identities of the individuals who were injured. *

Intersections are dangerous. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety writes that roundabouts are safer than traditional intersections. According to the IIHS, by forcing motorists to enter a circle, roundabouts cause drivers to slow down. Additionally, many common causes of crashes, including head-on collisions, left-turns, and right-angle wrecks, are eliminated by this design. Since many of the most serious intersection crashes occur under these sets of circumstances, roundabouts are able to reduce the risk of severe crashes.

Pedestrians are also safer when roundabouts are used. The distance for people to cross is shorter in a roundabout than in many other intersection designs, and people only cross traffic that is traveling in one direction at a time.

In addition to the safety benefits, roundabouts can improve the flow of traffic and cut down on the amount of time that vehicles spend idling. As a result, this feature cuts the number of emissions and lowers the amount of fuel that drivers use.

While it takes time for motorists to get used to these traffic features, studies indicate that the rate of collisions drops over time as drivers learn how they function.
