Driver Dies Days After Severe Wreck in Colleton County

March 30, 2020

COLLETON COUNTY, SC- Live5news.com writes that a driver who was involved in a two-car collision died this week several days after the crash. The incident took place in the early morning on US 17A close to Ridge Lane. Police stated that a 2013 Dodge pickup truck collided head-on with a 2007 Nissan SUV that drove across the center line in the roadway. The driver operating the Nissan sustained severe injuries in the crash, and responders transported the person to the Trident Medical Center where he or she later passed away.*

The coroner’s office is not yet releasing the identity of the person killed in the wreck.

Head-on collisions are frequently deadly because they involve intense amounts of force. Car crashes occur in three impacts. The first is the car’s impact with another vehicle or object. The second is an impact between the occupants and the inside of their car. The third impact occurs when the occupants’ organs crash into the inside of their bodies.

While carmakers are constantly working to make the safest vehicles possible, they are not yet able to protect people in high-speed impacts because of the internal damage that often occurs. When it comes to head-on wrecks, the forces are often deadly at just 43 miles per hour, even when motorists are using their seatbelts and driving cars equipped with airbags.

One way to stay safer when on the road is simply to slow down. At lower speeds, crashes become more survivable. Another way to reduce the risk of being killed in a crash is to avoid undivided streets with higher speed limits as fatal head-on collisions are more likely on those roads.
