Pedestrian Killed in Tragic Williamsburg County Crash
WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, SC- Live5news.com writes that a person died in a tragic pedestrian collision in Williamsburg County this week. The incident took place in the evening on Thurgood Marshall Highway close to its intersection with Cane Branch Road.*
Reports indicate that a pickup truck was attempting to pass another car when it collided with the person. The truck then veered off the roadway and ran into a ditch. Responders rushed the victim to the hospital, where the person later died from his or her injuries. The driver did not suffer any injuries in the crash. The coroner has not released the identity of the person killed in the collision. It is not clear whether charges will be filed in relation to the incident.
Pedestrian crashes are becoming a nationwide epidemic, with more people dying every year. In 2019, early estimates indicate that the number of pedestrian deaths was higher than any year since 1988. One of the most significant causes of the rising number of these incidents is the fact that cars are becoming bigger. The popularity of light trucks and SUVs is leading to more severe injuries when people are struck by vehicles.
Crash prevention technology is helping to reduce the number of deaths each year, but the benefits are only apparent when it comes to vehicle occupants. The reason for improving safety for people inside cars is likely the more advanced crash prevention technology. The pedestrian avoidance systems are not yet proving as effective. These systems fail to work in the dark, which makes them much less useful. Most pedestrian deaths occur at night.
