Tragic Crash Kills One, Injures One in Lancaster
LANCASTER COUNTY, SC- The heraldonline.com writes that one person died and another individual sustained injuries in a crash that took place in the early evening in Lancaster County. The incident occurred on Pleasant Plain Road and involved an SUV and a semi-truck.*
The victim was identified as a 71-year-old man from Kershaw. The crash took place while both of the vehicles were heading northbound and collided with one another. The driver in the semi-truck was thrown from the vehicle. Responders rushed the man to the Medical University of South Carolina-Lancaster Hospital, but he died several hours later from his injuries.
The driver in the SUV was also hurt in the wreck and was transported to the same medical facility as the victim. Reports have not indicated the severity of that person’s injuries. Police are still investigating the incident.
Deadly traffic crashes have been on the decline in the United States. Many of these incidents are being avoided because newer vehicles are coming with crash avoidance technology. Systems in newer cars are able to help drivers maintain their lanes, alert them when a vehicle is in their blind spot or when they are approaching another car too fast. Each year a small decrease in vehicle occupant fatalities is occurring, but the progress is tempered by increasing numbers of pedestrian deaths and an increase in crashes involving large trucks.
The technology that is helping drivers in passenger cars avoid collisions may be able to help drivers in trucks avoid crashes as well. Many of the same features will be included in new truck models. However, so far, the benefits of the systems for use in large commercial vehicles are not apparent.
