Two Die in Tragic Crash Near Brice Stadium

March 07, 2020

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC- Wltx.com writes that two people were killed in South Carolina this week in a crash that took place on Bluff Road. One of the victims was identified as a 46-year old man, and the other was a 33-year-old man, both from Columbia. The three-vehicle wreck occurred in the early morning.*

Reports indicate that a 2002 Honda sedan drove through a stop sign at the intersection of Bluff Road and Eden Street. An eastbound 2015 Dodge Ram collided with the driver’s side of the vehicle. The Honda was then pushed into another car.

The younger victim died at the scene while the other man was transported to the Prisma Health Richland Hospital, where he was declared dead a short while later. Both victims were killed by blunt force trauma, according to the coroner’s report. Police stated that neither of the men were using a seat belt at the time of the collision.

The crash is still under investigation. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is handling the case.

Studies have revealed the shortcomings of intersection design. Crossroads style intersections involve vehicles traveling in many different directions to cross one another’s paths. The results are often dangerous and sometimes fatal.

If a driver makes a mistake, this can lead to a fatal side-impact or head-on collision. There are better ways to design intersections. If the goal is to prevent crashes and save lives, roundabouts are a far better option than a crossroads. At a roundabout, the cars are all traveling in the same direction, limiting the number of conflict points. As a result, there are fewer collisions and a drastic reduction in fatal crashes.
