Tragic Clemson Road Crash Victim Identified

February 26, 2020

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC- Abccolumbia.com writes that a crash killed a woman in Richland County this week. The incident occurred on Clemson Road at its intersection with Salisbury Lane. The county coroner says that the victim was a 39-year-old woman who was driving one of the vehicles involved in the wreck.*

Police reports indicate that the crash took place in the early afternoon. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Intersection crashes are common and lead to thousands of fatalities every year. According to the Federal Highway Administration, more than one out of every five deadly crashes takes place at an intersection. Hundreds of thousands of people are injured in these wrecks each year as well. Safety advocates acknowledge that intersections are dangerous. There are other ways to control traffic, and some are considered much safer.

In 2018, over 10,000 people died in intersection collisions, including T-bone or side-impact crashes and head-on collisions. Roundabouts have been shown to drastically reduce the number of collisions and cut down on the number of severe crashes even more. As one traffic engineer explained the difference, when cars are involved in a crash while traveling the same direction at lower speeds, responders will be cleaning up broken glass on the road rather than blood. Statistics support the engineer’s statement by showing that severe injury collisions drop by about 75 percent when a roundabout replaces a traditional intersection.

Of course, drivers are often not happy when a roundabout is installed because it may seem unfamiliar. Engineers say their goal is to save lives, and that most people change their minds after becoming used to these features. Not only are they safer, but they also reduce traffic delays. Most people can appreciate the smoother flow of traffic.
