Teen Dies in Pedestrian Crash in Fort Mill, South Carolina

February 23, 2020

FORT MILL, SC - Wbtv.com writes that a fourteen-year-old died in a pedestrian collision in Fort Mill this week. The incident took place on Pleasant Road near its intersection with Whitley Road in the early evening. Police stated that the boy was attempting to cross the street at the time of the crash.*

The young teen was airlifted to the Carolinas Medical Center, where he died the day after the incident. The victim’s grandfather stated that he dropped the boy off at a friend’s house that night. The teen and his friend were crossing the road to get to a playground located at the Pleasant Knoll Elementary School. The other teen made it across the street, but the victim was struck. The surviving teen stated that they looked both ways before attempting to cross the road.

The family moved to the neighborhood about two and a half years ago. The victim was a student at the Fort Mill High School. Several families in the area stated that the road is not safe enough for the children who often cross in the area. Some stated that the town should install speed bumps to prevent drivers from speeding in the vicinity of the playground. The grandfather said that the road has a 45 mile per hour speed limit, but drivers often travel faster. The school zone signs light up when school is in session, and the speed limit then lowers to 35 miles per hour.

A memorial now stands at the location of the deadly incident.

One local mom stated that she crosses the road with kids on bikes and a stroller, and yet drivers seem not even to notice her as they speed past.
