Owner of Charleston Bar Facing Criminal Charges in Deadly Hit-and-Run Crash

February 18, 2020

CHARLESTON, SC- writes that a fatal hit-and-run collision occurred early this week in Charleston, South Carolina and that the suspect has since been identified and apprehended. The incident took place in the early morning on the James Island Connector. A driver operating a gray BMW struck a man walking on the road and then fled the scene of the crash.*

The driver later called the police from his home. Officers arrived at the scene of the incident and found the victim had already died. The driver, identified as a 36-year old man and an owner of a bar in Charleston, was arrested following the police investigation into the crash. Police charged the motorist with driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of a deadly accident. The investigation is still being carried out, and police are asking that any witnesses or individuals with information regarding the crash report to officers. The Charleston County Coroner later identified the victim as a 57-year-old man.

Hit-and-run drivers are more likely to be driving under the influence of alcohol than drivers who remain at the scene of a crash. The reason for this is likely that these motorists know that they will be facing charges for the incident, even if it was not their fault. Of course, leaving the scene of a fatal crash is against the law, and the penalties for fleeing the scene can include prison time.

In many cases, police are never able to identify drivers who caused hit-and-run crashes. It is important that witnesses contact the police if they see one of these horrific collisions as the information that they are able to provide may be extremely crucial in catching the perpetrator.
