Tragic Head-On Collision Kills One, Injures One in York County

YORK COUNTY, SC- The heraldonline.com writes that a head-on collision took place in York County over the weekend. The tragic crash killed one person and injured another. The incident occurred in the afternoon on Marshall road when a 2010 Ford pickup truck was driving southbound and then veered across the center line and struck a 2012 Nissan head-on.*

The person in the Nissan died at the site of the crash. Police say that the victim was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. 

Reports indicate that the person operating the pickup truck was buckled up and survived the crash. That individual is receiving treatment in the Piedmont Medical Center. The condition of the injured driver is not available at this time. 

Head-on collisions are frightening because they can happen in a fraction of a second. On undivided roadways, these crashes can occur without warning because a driver may cross the center line and leave no time for the driver traveling in the right direction to react and avoid the impact. 

While wearing a seatbelt greatly increases the likelihood of surviving a head-on collision, at certain speeds, it is certainly not a guarantee. Vehicles are only tested for head-on collisions at up to 40 miles per hour, with belted occupants, and vehicles that are about the same size. Any head-on crash above 43 miles per hour comes with a high risk of death, even if occupants are buckled up, airbags are functional, and the vehicles are around the same size. The forces involved in these accidents are such that it is difficult to design a vehicle that will protect the occupants. Roads that permit speeds above 40 miles per hour should never lack a center median or traffic barrier.
